Kelvin Lord, Principal, began his career in intellectual property working in the patent department of Kodak Limited in London prior to moving to Australia. After sojourns in Sydney and Melbourne and qualification in Australia, Kelvin recognised that there was a business opportunity in far away Perth, Western Australia. In 1979 he moved his young family to the West and set up his own practice. For financial reasons the business was initially conducted from his home in Balcatta: Lord and Company was born!

In 1980 he became a member of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and opened an office in West Perth where he has been ever since. Kelvin was accepted as a fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute in 2000. He has always been an active RACI member, serving on the committee and giving many presentations at scientific seminars and conferences advising chemists and scientists how to protect their Intellectual Property. Lord and Company are regular sponsors of the RACI WA Newsletter and Events.

Today, Lord and Company employs a specialised team with diverse technical disciplines: Zhi Ling ZENG, PhD in chemistry, Matthew Skewes, Mechanical Engineering, Daniel Taylor, Electronics and Software, Grainne Smith, Biotechnology. This professional staff is complemented by the hard working support team: Sue Lynch, Joy Surin, Marie Sandian, Joanne Hum, Kelly McKenzie.

Kelvin mentors his enthusiastic team and encourages them to be active members of the professional organisations in their field.

In the last 30 years Lord and Company has obtained patent protection for a large number of clients, both individuals and large corporations, from virtually all sectors of business. In addition the firm maintains close affiliations with a broad base of overseas associate patent attorney firms assuring its local clients of quality professional assistance abroad when required.

First flag ship clients were SDI Limited based in Melbourne and Solahart in Perth who are still with Lord and Company. Then followed a large range of corporate and individual clients including Kresta Blinds, Chicken Treat, Water Corporation, Red Rooster, Austal Ships, iinet, Garford, Detention Screens Australia, Hire Intelligence, Sunseeker Swimwear, Mrs. Mac’s, Creatures of Leisure and the Mal Atwell Group.

As a proactive and supportive member of the Western Australian community, Lord and Company also supports new inventors and sponsors new release competitions, especially in the agricultural field.
