Australian Patent Applications 2008

Lord and Company Top the Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard 2008

Lord and Company have been ranked #1 (weighted) and #2 overall in the Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard 2008 with a total of 112 applications filed in the year. They filed 28 Australian applications, five more than their nearest competitor, which helped push their weighted average to 39. The second place organisation had a weighted average of 23 with the majority scoring under 15.

The Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard is a comprehensive collection of data about the number of patent applications made in Australia each year. The average counts the total number of applications divided by the number of registered patent attorneys in each firm. The weighted average is the sum of the Australian and non-Australian averages based on the assumption that an Australian application requires eight times as much work for a patent attorney as a non Australian.

The Scoreboard is a useful tool for enterprises that facilitate the commercialisation of research projects and also includes the following:

  • A breakdown of the technology areas in which applications are filed;
  • The number of patent applications filed by individual patent attorney firms; and
  • Which patent attorney firms file the most patent applications in the various technology areas.

Australian Patent Applications Scoreboard 2008 is published by Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia (IPRIA)
Faculty of Economics and Commerce Melbourne Institute at the University of Melbourne.
